The Beauty and Delight that was The Le Vin, July Edition, Nairobi, Kenya

All lovers start out the same way. We are moved by the simple fact of tasting wine. There is something in wine that captures our attention. It could be the aroma, the texture on your palate, or just the moment frozen in time that leaves you wanting a repeat experience.

Saturday, 22nd of July, was such a day. Le Vin brought the wine experience to the people at The Curragh Irish Pub, Ngong Race Course, Nairobi, Kenya.

Melissa Mwende, the founder of Little Wine Basket, made sure that she delivered the best experience despite the fact that she was overbooked. No one was left out. The event was very relaxing thanks to the soothing music that complemented the atmosphere and just right for intimate and friendly conversation.

Now don’t get me started on the meal plan. I liked how keen the food was selected to match perfectly with the wine. It was literally a match made in heaven.

The Pairing

Vegetable skewers with raita (onions, bell pepper, zucchini, and tomatoes) were paired with Excelsior Carbernet Sauvignon while grilled tilapia was paired with Excelsior purebred red and purebred white.

Grilled lamb chops with green salad went really well with Excelsior Sauvignon Blanc 2016 and purebred red. The starter was bread and cheese paired with Excelsior sweet Chardonnay vinegar SVC.

Most of the people we interviewed really loved the Tilapia option. Most were surprised by the perfect pairing and had no idea fish would go that well with wine. Honestly, neither did I.

Sommelier Juan Cambil, with over 20 years in wine experience, took us through the process of tasting wine, evaluating it, and successfully eliminating all hints of oenophobia – the fear of wine. He made understanding wine so easy and fun!

Some of the things he made me realize is that, just like food, your initial taste of wine definitely starts with your eyes. The color tells you a lot about the wine. I also learned that when looking at wine, hold out the glass and tilt it a bit and you can actually notice the depth of color to the center of the glass.

A variety of wines were also served at the Le Vin event. However, my best was Cabernet Sauvignon. I loved  the dark concentrate and rich aroma. I love wines with such depth of flavor. Juan taught us how to swirl, smell and sniff the wine which helps provoke your taste buds. Your sense of smell is very strong and helps you discern more aromatic complexities of wine.

The knowledge of wine ingrained in Juan’s system was quite impressive. It was quite thoughtful of Melissa  and delightful to the rest of us for this wine experience. Her wine company, Little Wine Basket, definitely has more in store for Kenya.

The wine industry and culture is growing strong in Kenya. Learning how to look at wine, sample the aroma, and taste the wine will come in handy.

Le Vin, Nairobi, ‘Me I Love Kenya,’ July Edition, proved to be very educative and productive. Until then I am sure wine will never taste or smell the same to all who attended.

The more you taste wine the better you get at identifying wines and matching the right foods with it and I definitely intend to be at the next Le Vin event to perfect the art.
